Anyone ever see this movie?

In case you haven't seen it, it is a dystopian vision of the future where human emotion has been outlawed. It is your classical Orwellian future, dirty streets populated by those that think humanity needs to maintain its humanity, and the clean, modern city where people have given up their emotions for societal security.

They also through in a good measure of guns and Kung Fu action to see you through to the end without having to sit there while nothing happens. However, my main issue with this movie is that throughout the movie you see people take this drug that supresses their emotions.

All the antagonist characters supposedly take this drug as they are part of the evil establishment. However there are several parts in the movie where someone who is supposedly chemically supressing their emotions give rousing speeches and shout and flail their arms around as they are orating. My question is this.

If everyone is taking these emotive suppressants, why do they give such emotionally driven speeches? It would seem some of the actors forgot who they were playing and just gave it the old college try a little too hard.

Still, it is not a terrible movie.

Nigger this, nigger that.

I was reading Imagesinwords journal earlier today and I came across her entry on a publisher censoring the word nigger from Mark Twain’s works. Hours later, totally at random, I clicked on an old journal entry of mine and the first entry on the page was a reference to Mark Twain.

What are the odds of that?

Unfortunately, that is the way they were back then. My great-grandmother used to tell us stories about how bad it was.

Thankfully, those of us who are not neanderthals are smart enough to evolve. But as I was saying earlier in Images and Deity's journals, erasing and changing the words isn't going to change or erase history and the pain it caused.

I think as someone else said in Deity's journal, and Images I think also said the same, if they changed them, it would be as if we are trying to put everyone in a bubble, and instead of desensitizing us to the word itself, it is more like trying to hide and pretend that the despicable things that man did never happened.

Well, regardless if this is probably one of the best books (American or not) ever written in the history of Literature - still one would ask WHAT MAKES IT GOOD - it's about a kid who doesn't want to go to school and instead goes away and makes a raft and whatnots.

But those were the days - when one would just want to escape from the reality of it all.

Now, reality's bites - hard.

Just watched Louis Theroux's show about white supremacists.

The sense of entitlement and righteous privilege these people give off is what allows a group to sink so low.

It seems that America's habit of telling its citizens that they are all capable of anything and that their opinions matter is the bed rock upon which these people base their beliefs.

I mean you give a stupid racist permission to voice their opinions and you are asking for trouble.

If stupid people were just told that they were idiots and that their opinions should be kept to themselves a lot of this could be avoided.

Obviously I am over generalising here, but it would be a good start.

I know what you mean... this is the very thing I say when I hear them spouting such ignorance. We give the same rights to the Westboro Baptist Church freakshows- and I get the whole 'equal rights' thing... and then when I listen to this crap from these people- I can understand how dictatorships form. I wish there was some way to corral these idiots and shut them up. It's even more sickening to hear the little kids they have saying the same things.

On a related topic, did you realize that I have never owned slaves? Not only that, I was never involved in the Crusades. So why is it that some people think I owe them something as a result of historical events? Seems to me that they weren't involved either. That's like asking me to pay you for the injuries someone else suffered in an accident caused by yet another someone else. That is not an oversimplification either. Someone you never met did something terrible to someone else you never met and therefore you deserve compensation.
